WARNING large inverter chargers

Hi folks,

This warning may apply to anyone who has a large inverter charger of any make.

I got lucky today.

I was running the generator (Yamaha 3000 sIEB) and roof air and using the Magnum to charge the battery bank.

I had to go do some chores, so I dutifully shut down the Magnum from load support mode, and shut down the generator.

The case on the Magnum was at 41 C (104 f), so I had made as much room as I could around it to help with cooling.

I came back to find soot up the wall above the Magnum and the plastic where the DC cables enter melted.

Not suprizingly I've let the magic blue smoke out.

Fortunately everything is "plug and play" so I was able to wire around the Magnum in 20 seconds.

It will be a two thousand dollar lesson--but that is better than coming back to a melted frame on the ground.

I enjoyed the features of the Magnum. My concern is that someone else not might be so lucky as I was.

At smk's suggestion I've reached out to Magnum.
  • PT, ISTR the Magnum guy posts on here once in a while. IMO change the title of this thread real quick to not slam all Magnums :) and just post what happened. Meanwhile, let him know about this and see what he will do for you.
  • If I recall correctly; purchased from an "authorized" reseller, they carry a 36 month warranty.

Maybe that explains the other odd problems you've been having with that inverter, gremlins inside fighting to escape along with the magic smoke.
  • I don't know how long the warranty is I've had the unit since Order Date: 2/28/2014 12:19 PM

It did not get installed until May of 2014.
  • Hi Jim,

You have got that "dead right".

I do know that the Magnum was drawing about 1000 watts to charge the battery bank at 74 amps before I had shut it down.

So glad you are safe Don, a few grand is still cheaper than a RV.
  • Hi 2oldman,

The fault was internal to the Magnum and it was powered down and the generator was off. So no fuse to blow as there was zero load on the unit.

Wow. Your cat fuse didn't do its job?
