water heater door

Hello, we have a fairly new rig, and a few times we have noticed water leaking in from somewhere. I have narrowed it down to every time it rains, it comes in through the water heater door. Anyone else ever have this problem? Any ideas on what to do? As I inspect the door, I don't see anything wrong with it. There is a vent for exhaust, and I am assuming the rain comes in there, but I can't be the only one having this problem, so I am thoroughly confused. The rig is a 2015 Aspen Trail 2811BHS

  • I would like to retract what I said earlier. I looked at it again from the outside, and I see now the water heater sits in like a plastic tub, and any water coming in through the vent can't get inside. It looks like it is installed well, and I don't see any holes, or bad caulking. I am now thinking maybe the furnace door (which is right next to it). Again, I don't see anything noticeable, but feel it is more of a possibility. I don't believe its a leaking water heater, as the ONLY time it leaks, is when it rains, and we don't have the awning out. Its driving me crazy trying to figure out where this is coming from. Again, only when it rains...

I appreciate all of the suggestions too!
  • You have an Atwood water heater........exhaust vent on top left.
Even if rain does come in thru vent in door it just runs down heat shield over exhaust tube.

Chances are rain is coming in via top of frame/seal.

Check the tightness of the frame mounting screws
  • With the water heater door open you should see caulk around the water heater sheet metal flange. The exhaust vent for the flame does not go inside the RV, it is only inside the tank.

It could be that the gas line was not sealed good. Some have rubber seals some caulk or putty.

My current TC had a leak where the installer cut the hole too big and just sealed it with caulk which cracked and drew up after a year or so and started leaking. It was only about 1/8" too wide but the caulk funneled the water into it.
  • All of the heaters I've seen slide in and are bolted from the outside. This is where the seal is. Before you pull the heater and reseal it, make sure the water fittings are tight. My have worked loose before and leaked in the back side of the heater.

Those doors are mostly for looks. No gaskets, etc. I'd suggest you go to Chris Bryant's site and find the manual for your water heater. See what the installation process is, and check to see if something's not sealed. And, please post the Make and Model of this heater. That's more important in a case like this, than the Make/Model of the RV it's mounted in.
