The two of you are talking about two different parts. The mixing valve is indeed $150 and a standard check valve is $7. You will have minimal luck fixing the mixing valve but some people do. I suggest you get a new one and get it replaced. Please state the model number of your water heater so we can be sure you have a mixing valve.

Mixing valve used on Atwood XT Models. (GE9-EXT or GE16-EXT)
Installed right on hot out with a cold water connection. Very Hot out (160*F) mixes with the cold for a hot out to rv at 130*F.
Check valve is just a cheap plastic plunger/spring/O-ring assembly in hot out to stop backflow into tank when tank is bypassed.
