The thermo couple is to the side of the flame. The manual for the water heater show the flame coming out horizontally and that would make the thermo couple be in the flame. But, the flame goes up vertically and that makes the thermo couple beside the flame. When I get back out to where I store my 5th wheel I will take a picture and post it.
Found this online. This is what mine looks like, with the thermo couple beside the flame.
