Water Heater pilot light will not stay lit?

I have a 92 Layton 5th wheel and the pilot light on the water heater will not stay lit. I changed the thermo couple, but the only one that I could find had a 18 inch wire on it. The original one had a 10 inch. I can light the pilot, but it will not, stay lit unless I hold my lighter to the thermo couple. The burner will light and heat up the water, but after it shuts off and cools down the I can hear the magnetic switch click off and the pilot will go out. I was able to bend the thermocouple holder a little, but probably 75% of the time the pilot will go out. If I can find a thermo couple with a shorter wire on it would it work better? Or is there something else that I need to try?

  • Camperpaul,

I tried to adjust the flame so it was larger, but it would not get any bigger. I thought about trying to clean the orifice on the pilot, but didn't know if that was a good idea. What's the best way to clean the pilot orifice?

  • Clean the pilot light orifice and adjust the pilot light flame to better heat the thermocouple.
  • Rich,

The thermo couple is to the side of the flame. The manual for the water heater show the flame coming out horizontally and that would make the thermo couple be in the flame. But, the flame goes up vertically and that makes the thermo couple beside the flame. When I get back out to where I store my 5th wheel I will take a picture and post it.

Found this online. This is what mine looks like, with the thermo couple beside the flame.

  • I doubt shorter wire will make any difference.
Didn't you already prove the the TC is not in the flame far enuff ??
