Yes... the rope, when pulled slightly tight will cause a crease (channel) from one side of the awning to the other and the rain will follow the rope since the rope will be the lowest point at the edges and highest at the center. You don't need to pull it super tight, just enough to get the rope at the top of the slide out on the edges. I just use a plain cotton rope (clothes line from walmart).
