Water Pump Motor Repair

Hi. I have a Shurflo waterpump. It works, but is slow. I have taken apart the diaphragm and inspected it and it looks great. It seems the motor is running slower. The motor usually makes enough noise that I can hear it running, but now is so quiet I have to be near it to hear it running.
The water out of the shower head is just strong enough to look like a shower, but is very weak.
Is this the motor?
Can it be repaired? Can the motor only be replaced?

(I know the knee-jerk answer is to tell me to replace it. I have read enough forums to know I will get a lot of "replace it" answers no matter what the question or how expensive or cheap the item is, I know already about the option to replace something, I am not on a forum to figure that one out. I am looking for advice on a repair, thanks.)

  • I haven't seen this addressed yet, but are your batteries at least 12 volts? If your battery voltage is low then I believe that your pump is going to run slower.
  • As noted, the motors are nearly as expensive as the whole pump (a few are actually more!). However, you can certainly take the motor apart, oil the bearings and replace the brushes, *if* you can find replacements the right size.
  • YES you can replace motor.

HERE are the part numbers for the 'classic series'

But motor will cost roughly $60

You can buy new complete pump/motor replacement (Shurflo 4008) for $65
  • Some pumps have a filter bowl between the fresh tank the the pump. If you have one it might be plugged. I would try to eliminate the water source or hose first, then disconnect the outlet hose at or near the pump and see if if is any different there.
  • I'm sure you don't need to put a line pressure valve downstream of the pump to confirm what you already know. Replace the pump. It's an easy install and they aren't expensive. Good luck.
