I just hate when that happens, that's why I have changed out the thermostat (to 120) on every RV I've had.

Valving is on backside of WH tank

Cold water in (bottom)
Bypass (connects cold and hot lines)
No Hot out valve IF check valve is used




Or 3 valves could have been used
Cold (bottom)
Hot (top)
Bypass (middle)




Water should heat to 140*F (normal temp t-stat)
If normal t-stat fails to OPEN then ECO (high temp t-stat) will open at 180*F .....then lock out any reheating and 'Fault Light' will come on (RED Light on On/OFF Panel)

Hot /warm/cold temp fluctuations is a result of cold mixing with hot

Failed t-stat will just give you really HOT water until used up but not hot/cold/hot

What is a winterizing bypass valve? And how will I know where to find it?

Either bypass valve is open or maybe the outside shower valves are both open.

It is possible like others have said that the winterizing valve is partially open or a mix style faucet is open. Showers both inside and out have mixer valves on the shower head, but the water valves must be on.

It is an Atwood 10 gallon water heater. Model number GC10A-3E. Don't know of you will need more info or not. I am going to drain the water as best I can tomorrow as the temp is dropping and we won't be back for a month or so and don't want to Crack the pipes.
