we're boondocking

There is a 30 amp fuse that serves as the battery disconnect for our 2 12v deep cycle batteries.

When we run the generator and plug in trailer the 30 amp fuse blows. We are unsure if generator is charging the batteries correctly.

When we run the solar system the batteries will charge and the fuse will not blow. Yes, the converter is unplugged when we use the solar.

The battery indicator panel inside the trailer only shows 2/3 or "good" but the hand held volt meter shows the batteries read 11.8 and 11.94 each.

What are we doing wrong?

  • You should not need an external battery charger. The converter should be able to charge batteries without any issues.
Check to see what coverter you have, make and model.
Check wire size from battery to 12 volt DC distribution panel. Check wire size between converter and 12 volt DC power distribution panel.
Verify polarity of the battery. Could be reversed!
Could be simply too small of fuse or the batteries are not good.
  • Fully charged btry is `12.6/7. google 12 volt side of life read and learn
  • My apologies for being so naive....however, do we need to remove the battery connections on both batteries in order to charge them with the charger or? I guess I need more detail on step by step. sorry!
  • Regular use of a generator with a solar system is a fail. Fix or up grade the solar. Read battery articles to learn...11.8...11.9 are below fifty percent not 2/3s. “When we run the solar system”?? Solar “runs” whenever there is light.
  • I have a battery charger which can run off the generator to fully charge each battery. The batteries are only 4 months old.

Should I remove each battery and charge individually.

Thanks so much for your help.

    Giggle at will!
