WFCO Power Center 35A vs 40A

I want to replace the old converter charger in my 1998 Palomino Bronco with a new Three-Stage unit that will output 14+ volts as needed to bulk charge my batteries

WFCO makes two units that have my interest
WF-8735P and WF-8740P
The only difference I can see is one is 35A output and the other is 40A.

I have two 12V AGM batteries. Will the extra 5A make and difference. If so, what?

Thanks
  • After looking at both the WFCO and the Progressive Dynamics, IO think the PD will afford easier servicing and the reviews on its actual performance seem better. A few more $$ but looks to be worth it. The difference in price to keep my fuse panel and replace the converter was negligible.

I'll sell the Centurion on Craigslist and recoup a few $$.
  • What converter, make and model do you have now?
The WFCO units listed are the complete power center, including breaker and fuse panels. You could just change out your existing converter with an updated unit.

Just saw that you have a Centurian converter. Best converter recommends the WFCO 8735

  • Found a great deal on Ebay for the PD4045.....$169 free shipping / no tax. So I ordered one up.

Looks like it will be a great upgrade from what I have and I won't need to use the Black And Decker charger to keep the batteries up any longer.
  • Looking more into Progressive Dynamics, this looks like the unit I should get for my small truck camper

    "Mighty?Mini" The Compact All-In-One System...

    with built-in Charge Wizard®

    What say the board?
  • Agreed that Progressive Dynamics is a better unit, but space constraints might out you with the WFCO
  • Thanks folks...Certainly price is a consideration. I can buy the WF-8740P for $110. And ease of install is another reason. It is just about a direct fit for the Centurion unit I currently have. Room is a factor. This truck camper doesn't have much.

The Progressive Dynamics come highly regarded by most everyone. Must be a good unit. The Centurion has a breaker panel I could reuse with some modification.
  • Try to avoid WFCO if you actually want 14.4 volts charging. WFCO is notorious for not shifting to boost mode when expected. This especially true of the very common 55 amp rated version.

You are far better to get Progressive Dynamics with the Wizard or IOTA with IQ controller.
Powermax is good if plugged in but drops to float at about 75% charge. Too early for charging on generator.

Is there a particular reason you are looking at WFCO? lowest price?

8700 is the whole power center... is that what you need or do you already have a fuse/breaker panel?
