WFCO Quality

Had a WFCO8955 in my last two TT's. They never failed or ruined any batteries. But, charge times, that's another story.

Put up with the WFCO in the 1st TT because I didn't know any better. With the 2nd TT we did a bit more dry camping and really got tired of running the generator 3 hours just to get a minimal charge (batteries discharged to 12.2v; 18 amps of initial charge current @13.6v).

As a test, temporarily connected the WFCO to a pair of discharged batteries (12.0v) via 3 ft. of 4 gauge cable, hoping to activate bulk/boost mode. No go. Got a whopping 2 amp increase in charge current--20 amps.

Installed a new PD9260 as a primary converter. Left the WFCO8955 installed as a secondary backup. The PD9260 outputs 55-60 amps of initial charge current (bulk/boost mode @14.4v). Getting the same charge with the PD9260 in just one hour that used to take the WFCO8955 3 hours.

For those that do any kind of dry-camping, it's really hard to ignore these kind of performance extremes.

I never had any issues with my WFCO 8955, the only reason that I changed it to a PD 4655 is that it would never to go into 14.4v boost charging mode, making it very inefficient for boondocking and requiring loooong generator times to bring the batteries back. Now I can use the pendant to put the PD in boost mode when it doesn't go there by itself.

For folks who don't boondock it works fine.

My 3 year old WFCO 8955 still works... at putting out a measly 13.8V float voltage. But that's about it, almost useless for bulk charging my 12V battery while boondocking. Defective by design, for my purposes.

Now my 30 amp $50 MegaWatt power supply unit, set at 14.8 to 15.0V, kicks butt on that WFCO 8955, even running my small Honda EU1000I.

Great piece of equipment for my purposes, keeps generator running time down to a minimum on those cloudy or rainy days where solar isn't going to help me much.

My PD 808 is 44 years old and is still making DC power. I was going to replace it but after I lifted it (noticed the weight), took a look at the rectifier circuit, and how it was built, I decided to keep it. It has an adder board on it for battery charging, probably a sophisticated novelty in that era. It is virtually silent (no fan).

My WFCO in my trailer I just sold was almost 10 years old and still going.

Many will drive all the way across town to save a quarter per gallon of gasoline.

Dump three grand on the tables in a casino then stand in line for a half-hour at the chow hall buffet to save five bucks.

Down here they'll guzzle six bucks worth of beer, smoke three dollars worth of cigarettes then plead poverty when somone points oit their car has burned-out tail light bulbs.

But advise them a three hundred dollar converter is a better deal than a two hundred dollar converter? Shirley You Jest...

This is why WFCO is king of the market.... people want low price above anything else.

Lightly loaded RVs will not have tire problems either. Water heaters seldom used do not clog, air conditioners in cool climes last decades ad nauseum...

WFCO Quality: Oxymoron.

The WFCO converters are probably the most commonly used on RVs today, mainly due to cost. My new FR trailer came with one and it's worked fine for going on 3 years. Before that I had the piece of junk Parallax in my old trailer and it worked fine for 10 years and was still fine when I sold the trailer. The vast majority will have not problems with the WFCO IMO.
