As the sulfuric acid combines with the lead the specific gravity drops and you get electric energy out.
You need to put enough electric energy in to separate the sulfate from the lead plates and bring the sulfuric acid back to full strength to restore capacity. When sulfur remains combined, the battery is considered sulfated. With time the lead-sulfate hardens and cannot be reversed. That is when you buy a new battery.
