I have had to continue the equalization charge in excess of 16-hours to recover some batteries. Others reach a point then fail to recover additional acid density. The reason is the sulfate cannot ionized back into solution. It's like a coating over tar blocking the plate from any further electrical activity.
The remaining viable plates then have to deal with a lower specific gravity electrolyte -- further reducing the capacity of the battery.
