What Android Apps does mexicowanderer need for his Galaxy S2

Mex has a couple of days in San Diego next week.

If you could please make suggestions to him for apps you think he would need down in Old Mexico.

Provide the name of the app and a direct link of the app on Google Play store for him in this thread, with a brief description first what the app does, so he can decide yes or no on the app.

Memory space on a 16GB phone could be a little tight, unless he get's a spare memory SD card.

just trying to simplfy the process for him, and have all the links for him in one place, so he can look at this thread on his new to him smart phone at a MacDonalds with free wifi, and just click and load the apps without having to waste time searching for it.

  • Ahem, I graduated to STARBUCKS albeit half hot water. But then McDonalds seniors coffee price is mighty attractive.

Whatzuh ANDROID? Thought that was science fiction "Take Over The World Stuff"

But no foolin' I really appreciate this. Well, time to drag my knuckles and go get the car ready. 700 miles, and me with cataracts. No I cannot drive even in dim light.
  • Be careful with the flashlight apps. It was on the news a few days ago that flashlight apps that have large files contain malware that allows info grabbing. They have identified 3 places that are gathering info with this app. Russia, China & India. They can access everything in the phone. Recommendations is delete it and backup contacts then go get a factory reset on the phone. It was stated that flashlight apps with small files are pretty safe. So check the size of the file before downloading. Just what I heard on the news.
  • This little dude runs around inside the chip on a Galaxy S2, and makes all things possible to work properly.

Coffee has been free the past 2 weeks at Mickey Dee's. Who knows, it might still be on, or ask for your senior discount, before paying.
  • I have Iphones so the apps are different but the most usable ones I have are Lightbox (flashlight, microscope, obnoxious blinking light), Handy Carpenter ( level in three dimensions, plumb bob, ruler), Google Maps, and a Night Sky app. (mostly for my own enjoyment but you could navigate by it).

*When we're done helping Mex, could a Forum member that is a devotee of digital phones, an accountant, a Verizon Wireless employee, a stage magician, a street hustler, and a therapist, lead me through upgrading four phones and changing my wireless plan within Verizon? Seriously, it is a complete puzzle to me.:?*

My two go to's are Raindar and SwissArmyKnife.

He can find them easy enough.

    "Working"

Swiss Army Knife has been bookmarked in my laptop.

Raindar needs weather radar. I know they have weather radar 780 miles to the north at Guasave Sinaloa, but rain comes and it goes. Checking a hurricane tracking site might be more useful as the cellular system there is the last to go out except if there is no power.

How useful is the GPS? GPS is not really useful in Mexico unless a person doesn't mind driving up a wrong way street or off a cliff. But in the USA trying to find a doctor's office in a strange neighborhood can be frustrating. In order to get something that yells TURN HERE do I need to get a regular gizmo that clamps to the dashboard? Something simple. Type in an address and a map comes up on the screen...?

I usually carry a flashlight so this is no biggie. I also have a UV flashlight to find scorpions. They glow green just before they get real wide.

But then the cellular connection might be useful when trying to find out why my burro is braying at midnight.
  • All Android phones have turn by turn navigation built in, no apps needed. Just touch your maps app. It's all there.

PS - You should've gotten an S3 vs the S2. Capability on the S3 is more than good enough for even today's apps. The S2 is lacking.
