What is a battery monitor?

I bought this inexpensive one on ebay

It shows voltage and current flowing out of the battery or power out and watt-hours out since last reset. I figured the latter would effectively show the state of charge. Unfortunately it is not aware of current flowing into the battery, so does not take charging into account. That makes it useless for me as a state of charge monitor anyway. I might turn it around to indicate charging current and voltage.

It strikes me that tracking the energy is not going to work anyway because much of it can be lost as heat. Integrating current over time to keep a running total count of the charge on the battery might be effective. I see some electronics hobbyists on the Sparkfun forum are doing something like that using a micro controller.

Are there battery monitors available in stores that show state of charge?
  • I now have the little battery monitor permanently mounted and a new 100 watt solar panel installed. The little black spot to the right of the monitor is a switch to disconnect the monitor from power. It all seems to work! This was in October at lattitude 55 degrees, with nearly fully charged batteries, so only 0.15 Amps flowing into the batteries from the horizontally mounted collector. Looking forward to traveling with it next spring!
  • Course real He-Men don't need nothin' fancy...

Flip a light switch. When things stay dark it's telling you your batteries need a little boost. Course there is the two-wire checker hanging outta the wall method...

Strike the ends of the wires together

BLUE SPARK: No Worries. Pop another brewski.

YELLOW SPARK: Time to maybe start thinking about slipping out of the easy chair

CAN'T SEE THE WIRES: Yeah-Yeah-Yeah so big deal grab the starter rope...
