what is the spiral metal strip on old Dometic fridge ?

I really love old RV fridges. See my other thread about converting a two way to a three way.

In the back of the fridge alongside the big pipe where the heat is applied there is an open pipe with rod hanging in it loosely. At the end of the rod there is a 6" metal strip twisted in a spiral.

What is it? What does it do?

  • It is called a spiral baffle. LP flames do not dispurse the heat AROUND evenly. The heat from the flame goes straight up and cannot heat the boiler tube. So, that spiral baffle takes the heat and dispurses it evenly 360 degrees to heat the round boiler/flue tube. NO baffle or it is damaged, your refer will not cool correctly on LP. Doug
  • That's in the chimney for the gas burner - the metal strip stirs up and slows the hot exhaust gases to improve efficiency.
