What makes a light fixture 12v DC vs. 120v AC?

Looking at the paucity of choices in 12v fixtures for my new van build, I am wondering if I can repurpose 120v fixtures. What is the difference? Just the bulb? I cannot see why the electrons wo...

If I were building or outfitting an RV from scratch, I would think about using the LED tapes and these channels and diffusers for at least some of the lighting. I think they're slick looking while not being too conspicuous or gaudy. The corner molding style looks especially promising if you have any right angles to put it into.
