What makes a light fixture 12v DC vs. 120v AC?

Looking at the paucity of choices in 12v fixtures for my new van build, I am wondering if I can repurpose 120v fixtures. What is the difference? Just the bulb? I cannot see why the electrons wo...

Just FYI, there are 12V fixtures with a standard Edison style base which would allow either a 12V or 120V bulb to screw in. I know because I have 4 of them. The are 12V so only a 12V bulb will work but if you connected 120V to those lines you could screw in a 120V bulb. I have 12V Camco CFL bulbs but there are also standard light bulb looking 12V bulbs available in 25 and 50 watts.
