what signs for bearing failure

If bearings are starting to fail what signs do you notice. ( hot hubs, play in tire) anything else
  • IR detectors are fine but if the hub is too hot to touch, you have a problem. Nothing beats an eyeball on the race and bearings. The race will show small peening WAY before it fails.
  • Hot hubs are one thing, but a hot hub RELATIVE to the others is a sure sign somethings gone south.

One of these make it easy to check, and it's only about $20 from Harbor Freight:

  • Look for uneven tire wear as another sign of POSSIBLE bearing trouble. Any ONE of these signs should be enough to pull the hub and check the bearing though.
  • Lift the tire off the ground and spin the wheel. It wont be smooth and you will hear random clicks and clunks. It also may move in directions that are not normal.
If while spinning it you notice noises but the wheel still spins smoothly, it can be a sign there is grease on the brakes.
  • If the TT wheel passes you maybe the bearing is bad. Heat or grease on the rim are two other ways to tell
  • Noise and vibration, as well as play in the wheel. But hard to hear or feel any of that when you're way up there in the truck. For that reason I physically check and pack my bearings once a year.
  • every time I stop I feel the hubs , they should be a tad warm. service them yearly and they,ll last for yrs. also if you see a little grease thron around the rim ,the seals need attention.
