What size hole on hitch
What is the size of the hitch pin hole on a class III hitch? I tried a 5/8 but the pin doesn't fit, it's just a hair bigger that the 5/8 hole

It should be 5/8", either the hole is messed up or you bought a cheap pin that isn't to specification. Try the pin separately in the receiver and the shank if you haven't done that already.
