Hitch Ball size

What is the proper hitch ball size for the modern travel trailer? By searching on-line I'm seeing 2' and 2 5/16 and a few others. Surely there is an industry standard.
  • 2 5/16" is the standard for most Travel trailers. 2 inch for small trailers

My boat trailer is 2 inch.
  • If I was needing to buy a ball I would look on the trailer coupler and find what size is required. I know that on all of mine it states what size to use. JMO
  • I carry 1-7/8, 2 and 2-5/16

That covers something like 99 percent of the trailers. There were some odd sizes years (and years) ago. But 2 or 2-5/16 are the most common today
  • Size of the coupler and hitch ball is determined by gross weight and size of the trailer. There may be a few, smaller travel trailers and pop up campers, out there with a 2" ball.
  • As trailers got larger and heavier, the ball sizes (or shank sizes) have had to increase. 2-5/16" is the current standard.

  • I was putting the weight distributing hitch together yesterday and realized that I had a 2 inch. I need to get the right one so that I can go buy a TT and tow it away. BTW, those hitches weight quite a lot. Mine is rated a 10,000 pounds. Probably weights like, 60 pounds with the arms and chains and such.
  • My WD hitch is close to 100lb, If you are buying from a dealer that has a store they will have a ball you can buy.

they usually have anything one mite need so they won't loose a sale because of a small item.

Yea, I have been to a dealer and looked at a brand new Wildwood 27RLSS. I really like it. I guess it could be like 100 pounds. It was a hand full.
