wheel simulator installation

Went to have new tires put on my rig and when the mechanic went to put the simulator/hubcaps back on he couldn't get enough threads on the nuts to hold it in place. Looking at the nuts, the edges were all stripped out. Can't seem to find any pictures/diagrams on how this is supposed to be installed. Working on other types of mechanical stuff, you are supposed to have all threads in bearing at a minimum and usually 1/2 - 2 threads beyond. Anyone know how this is supposed to work?
shows only a couple of threads left after the wheel lug nuts are installed. only enough for about 1/2 the simulator attach nuts.

  • The tire place I use is usually set up for cars and light trucks. All the rv places around here seem to be taking appointments for next month. Either that or are 30+ miles away. Wasn't going to be driving that far on 10yr old tires that had been sitting in a storage yard for 5 years.
  • I'm guessing something got changed along the way. I would think a decent tire shop would be able to sort it out. I'm guessing it may have come with shorter lug nuts from the factory.
  • No, just bought it a couple months ago from the kids of the original owner. According to the box of records I got, he was pretty meticulous on keeping it up, however when he died, his kids stuck it in a storage yard and maybe used it a few times a year at most, mostly just sat around. I'm refurbishing everything from that abuse. It drives so much better with round tires instead of the square ones that I bought it with.
  • not sure, maybe they were just "hanging by a thread" :P
one was missing anyways. edges of old nuts were stripped. seems pretty sloppy of the manufacture to do it this way if that is the case.
