Put your hand over the exhaust and if it's exceedingly hot, your motor is running too lean and to hot. I'd clean up the carb up with some carb cleaner, have the shop you bought the generator at do it. And get some fresh fuel, brand new, in the tank, not anything you've had laying around for the mower.
