When moving trailer

If you were not using the weight distribution bars--the ones that go from the hitch head to the saddle brackets on each side of the trailer frame--that is likely your problem.

When I move off my site at the end of the month I will attach bars and see if that corrects my concern which from comments here probably is the case

The Equal-i-zer brand hitch is a weight distribution hitch and does not use "sway bars".

The torsion bars distribute weight from the hitch onto the front axle and some onto the trailer axle.

If you don't have the bars hooked up, I can see this happening. If I hook up my TT without the WD bars my hitch drops a decent amount.

Is the OP incorrectly calling the weight distribution bars sway bars perhaps? If you have a weight distributing hitch connected, the rear of the tow vehicle shouldn't be that low. Without using the "WD" hitch and bars, it could be very low.

To answer your question, shocks do absolutely nothing to support your vehicle unless they are specialty shocks (air shocks, spring overload shocks) IMO should not be used. Look at the bolt that holds a shock it is in no way strong enough to support a vehicle.

Shocks slow the vehicle bounce on the extend stroke. You can collapse a shock with your hands.

Hopefully not a belly full of water from a leak. Always a possibility and that could make the hitch end even heavier.
