Where to add oil on my Generac Guardian RV 6500? Pic inside

I bought a used 07 Georgetown Class A that came with a Generac RV Guardian 6500 (Wish it would have had an Onan). So I have had the generator just shut down on me a few times and thought maybe it was a low oil pressure warning or something. Usually will start right back up after shutting down and run for a few more hours before shutting down again. This is with basically no load besides lights and TV's going no A/C or microwave etc.

So I checked the oil and am a little confused. There appears to be 2 oil fill spots on this generator... Photo here.

The lower yellow plug has a dip stick and the upper yellow plug has no dipstick but both yellow plugs say oil fill. So I went through the 16 minute Guardian maintenance DVD and of course they say nothing about the Extra Yellow plug at top and don't even refer to the lower one. Instead the show an entirely different generator when showing how to perform maintenance.. So I break out the owners manual and it shows the Upper yellow plug in the photo of the parts but doesn't show it called anything. The lower one shows it's the Oil Dipstick and fill tube. So what is this upper yellow plug that says Oil Fill? When I take the cap off it looks dry inside. Did the previous owner just put an oil fill plug on whatever this thing is? I don't want to put oil in somewhere it shouldn't go. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks..

  • I have a 5.5 Generac in my MH and the set up is just as yours.....Dipstick in the bottom one, I fill at the top one (quicker)....I think they made many of them this way due to diff applications, etc......
  • You are fortunate.........so don't complain :B

You have 2 places to use when adding oil........top or bottom.

Top is just like your vehicle engine........right into the valve cover. Nice and easy to use....oil flows as you pour it in.

Bottom is for checking oil level (dip stick) but lots of times that is the only place to add oil. Very slow, messy, as the oil has to flow against itself back into sump.
It would be like having to add oil on a vehicles dip stick tube.

So be happy you have 2 places.
    And use the top one........easier.
  • I have a smaller Guardian and my oil fill looks like the lower one. It does fill very slowly. It has a dipstick attached to the cap.
  • Put oil in the top one and check with the bottom one
To me it look like the bottom only has a line going in and not one coming out.
So that mean it is a dipstick only.
You could add there but it would take it very very slow as the oil would have to go up hill to fill
  • Do you have a operator manual it should show where to add . I don't know why they would do it that way.
  • When generac made the engine they didn't know what it would be installed in. One of their applications wanted access from the top. The top one is the valve cover, it's your choice.
