I am looking to replace an old coach battery with AGM batteries for boondocking usage. I have space for (3) 12 volt group 24s without having to do any modifications, but could also just use 2 of the battery spaces for (2) 6 volt batteries.
So I am evaluating which combination produces the most amp hours at the best price? And which brand to buy?
I am looking into using solar panels to charge the batteries. The electric loads are modest. I expect to run Fridge, hot water, and cooking on propane, and the air conditioner on generator.
Your opinions and experience are greatly appreciated.
I have been 100% AGM since Jan 2009. I plan to stay with AGMs. Wets are cheaper to buy, but AGMs are cheaper to own. Deka is a good brand.
You don't want 3 x 12V. Too many cables and connections.
With AGMs, there is virtually no difference between 6V and 12V as both will have the same specs for equal weights. I.e., 2 x 6V 200AH GC and, 2 x 12V 100AH Grp 31 will be 200AH. Sam's Club has either for $180 each or $360 for the pair. In the Eastern states you get the Deka, Western states get Johnson Controls. Costco may have the same. Both can run a high Wattage inverter.
On the solar panels, you need to know your daily AH draws. With this info, you will then be able to make a recharging plan that coordinates genny/solar charging.
