The shorter the warranty, the less plates. Check the Cold Cranking Amps for starting batteries of the same size but different brands.
True deep cycle batteries typically don't specify a CCA number so check the "reserve capacity". Not all distributors specify this in the same way. Trojan is very thorough, specifying it in many ways. One common spec is the the 20 hour (sometimes mistaken called the 20 amp hour) discharge rate. This is the maximum current you can draw for 20 hours until you hit the "minimum voltage cut off".
The last quick and dirty method is weight. For batteries of the same size, a heavier one (more lead) will likely have more capacity.
