Why ABS instead of PVC?

I have noticed that all the DWV plumbing in my MH is ABS plastic. Is there a technical reason why ABS is used exclusively? Is it just that ABS costs about 1/2 of what PVC costs? If I redo a goodly portion of my drain system can I use PVC, which is much more readily available where I live. I understand there are specific methods that must be used where the ABS and PVC meet, but is there any reason other than cost that I cannot use PVC?

Just make sure to use the green stuff.

In general I have yet to find a transition glue that works long term.
I'm not claiming they don't exist, but I have yet to find a transition glue I trust long term.
I have re-done a few transition joints over the years.
When transitioning from ABS to PVC I will generally use a mechanical connection like a Fernco or No-Hub coupling.
  • Some Tid bits from internet.....Of course it's true...LOL
    Strength
ABS piping has a higher impact strength than PVC, especially at lower temperatures. However, ABS can deform under sun exposure.

    Durability
ABS is highly durable with high impact strength. PVC is less durable, as it is designed to be flexible and softer than usual plastics. However, both plastics are resistant to chemical and water degradation.

    Cost
    A 2in x 2ft ABS pipe costs $5.79 on Amazon.com.

    A 1in x 2ft PVC plain end pipe costs $9.99 on

  • If ABS is 1/2 the cost of PVC. That is your answer! It's cheaper
  • PVC does tend to get brittle in cold conditions, much more so than ABS. An interesting experiment (that I have not done) is to take a length of PVC pipe, put it in the freezer for awhile, and then take it out and drop it on a hard floor; it likely will shatter into a whole bunch of little shards.

It may also be that ABS is more readily available where the RV was made.
  • Do what you want just use the correct adhesive.

Are you on an on ramp or off ramp E, W, N, S,?
