Why do my eu2000s surge in Eco?

Both of my Honda eu 2000s are 15 years old and I've suffered carb problems by not properly maintaining them. However, I followed a very good post on this site and rebuild the carbs, essentially cleaning them thoroughly. They cranked right up after that but...when placed in Eco with little to no load, they surge by revving up and down. When under load and in Eco, they run perfectly. When Eco is turned off, they run perfectly. It is only Eco with no load that they run erratically.

Both do the same thing. Any idea how I can fix? If I put a little choke on them, they seem to be ok telling me they are running lean

  • It could be that the converter is trying to charge battery then drops off then tries again. This could be normal in ECO mode.

Look at page 37 of your owner's manual second to last paragraph.
  • Sea Foam or anything else will not do a damned thing for bleed air passages. No one else semmed to get them right so I became knowledgeable with Holleys, quadrajet, and thermoquad cab rebuilds. A rubber tip nozzle and 120 psi air is indispensable. That and a dip clean basket and boiling hot rinse water.
  • Have you tried adjusting the idle speed?
My Kipor would hunt for a lower idle speed when the carb was set too high.
  • Carb is still dirty.

The openings in those carbs are super small and it takes very little to gum them up.

You can try cleaning again. Also, I've had success just running a couple tanks treated with sea foam.

Once you've got them back...don't run a drop of fuel that isn't treated with something like stabil.
  • So why run them in the Eco mode? After you run through a couple of tankfulls of new gas, it will make sure the system is really cleaned out well, and get back to us. . .
