It is my understanding that in your area Lake Meade is your primary source of water. It is also my under standing that what you discard you drink after treatment. Probably the chemicals that treat the sewage makes the utensils rust free
I am on septic tank, but my understanding is that Las Vegas pumps fresh water up the lake and treated sewage is dump down the stream, so LA can get it.
Water and air treatment is huge business here.
I have well working softener for whole house and drinking water via chlorine filter in refrigerator.
Yet had had a salesman who talking about salt coming from softeners, wanted to sell me $12,000 unit that uses charcoal.
