The reason to do it this way is so your trailer battery gets the constant amps in bulk profile and to the 14s with the Vector, but would be stuck at 13.8v and tapering amps doing it just by jumper cables or 7-pin truck to trailer
Plus I get the MULTI-LAYERED CHARGE PROFILES ;).
But, seriously, why would the jumper cables mean tapering amps?
Edit: Dang. New page. Please see the new info and answers to you lovely people's questions on the previous page.
Jumper cables and 7-pin are stuck at alternator 13.8v constant voltage. Amps taper with any constant voltage, called the "Absorption Stage" of charging. 13.8 is not much more than 12.8 so there is not much "spread" between charger and battery voltages either, and the more spread the more amps you get, tapering or not. So the ideal is to charge at the 14.8v level and get some bulk charging going with constant, high, amps with battery voltage rising to 14.8--and then hold that 14.8 while amps now taper. What smart chargers are supposed to do.
You can't do that charging profile with alternator charging. You can get a special attachment to the alternator that is like a smart charger that will do that charging profile. They do that in expensive boats.
