Has anyone used or know of a backup camera that connects by wifi to a person's smart phone?I'd like a camera on the back of the truck and another on the back of the trailer but don't want to deal with a screen hanging off my dash got enough stuff there already), I see these ones using your smart phone but how good are they?

The ones I've see have a router or something as part of the kit.

I purchased a "wifi" enabled camera and my smart phone connected to it perfectly, obviously I just had to turn on wifi on the smartphone.There are plenty of new cams out now with wifi capabilities, even the new Go Pro cam has it.I haven't really used it a "live" situation I just played around with it at the camper storage facility and it worked OK.Ron W.

I believe a GoPro Hero 3 Black has about 100 feet of wifi range connected to your smart phone. I'm not 100% sure on that range but I know it's more than what cab to end of your trailer would be.

That curvature of that "fish eye" effect is due to the wide angle lens on these types of cameras. Another plus for a GoPro would be they're waterproof! My SIL has one and regularly takes his in their pool to film the grand kids.

Actually for looking backwards it's almost the same as the back up camera on my RAM, which is great for seeing "the whole picture". :B

Heck - just use a quad-copter - it can help you backing up and also check traffic ahead. :-)

I doubt it would have the required range. Max range (in a lab) is 32 ft, practical is about 10.

That's essentially the exact concept my quad copter has. Connect the camera to a wifi network, in this case a "camera" to my I Phone and it can be controlled from the phone. I can take still shots like the one below or video. Very easy and depending on how it's configured there's quite a bit of range to it too.

I've thought about using our GoPro the same way, but haven't really needed it. It would be nice for those occasions I don't trust my wife as a spotter.
