i think there is a little confusion
PT or one of the other magnum ownwers can correct me
but i think IF you set the shore power at 15a or any given amount
the magnum monitors the loads on the pass thru
if you turn something on, it will reduce the amount of charging power used
to keep total power within the the limit you set
but it is NOT an automatic 5amps of 120v use, that would only be a 600w aka 45amp charger
and that is NOT how it works
That's how mine works. The charger will use as many AC amps that are available, staying under the limit.
Hybrids might be a little different?
this is how I understand the hybrid to function. if it's detects a load while on 15amp shore setting and charging, like for AC for example, the "shore max" setting will cause a reduction of charge function and instead allocate to the load. if the load exceeds 15amps, then it will kill the charge and combine the 15amps from shore with whatever needs to be inverted from the batteries to service the AC load (called Load Support ACC on my panel, which will not allow more draw from the AC source than its set to). when the AC load terminates or drops, it will resume charging, allocating the 15amps, less any residual loads. it works in parallel to incoming loads. it does monitor the AC flowing through it, to the extent that flow is fed by the inverter (sub panel)
I can plug into a 30amp pedestal, then turn on the AC unit, and it will pull 30 on the pedestal and invert the balance to run the AC. when I turn off the AC, the charger becomes active and fills the batteries, with whatever is left over after servicing a load, if any.
lots of variability with the hybrid
I read the manual yesterday and will look again, but I think this is correct.
