I have on hand about 30' of #2 aluminum wire and about 100' of #6 aluminum wire. The run from the breaker to the outlet will be about 120'. Can I run about 30' or so of #2, then continue with #6 to the outlet? Feasible/possible/stupid idea or what?Thanks.GM

I guess you could, but I would not use aluminum wire at all. #6 aluminum wire is too small I think for 50 amps.:E

I would not run aluminum wire at all let alone spliced but for your distance I'd use #6 solid copper wire. Aluminum has problems with heating up and corrosion.

I have used the underground splice kits for that type of wire several times and always thought I did a good job of sealing it up. However, it always came back to bite me. If any moisture ever gets in there, the al will oxidize and fall to pieces. All that being said, if that is what I had, I would go for it considering the price of wire now.

Years ago I had a home wired with aluminum wire and it was a nightmare. Its a wonder it did not burn down.

And these are 3- or 4-conductor wires?

Reason to change? Lazy. I can save 30 seconds in set-up time by not having to use the 50A-30A dogbone.

Bored, maybe, and in need of a project. I just wired another 50A receptacle off the main breaker providing current to the house.

His new to him RV is a 50 amp. The old one was 30.
