Wire nuts?

I just replaced a dimmer switch in my truck camper. I used wire nuts to connect the wires. Now I am starting to think I should have used "automotive" type connectors. Any experience or thoughts? Will the wire nuts hold?

  • Don't forget to twist the wires together TIGHT before you put the wire nut on
  • When I had the guys at Many Trails RV hook up my toad, they specifically said they do not use wire nuts on stranded wire . . .ever. On solid wire, they prefer nice, new wire nuts (the type with metal inserts), or crimp caps.
  • There's too many vibrations and temperature changes for wire nuts to work properly in an RV.

    I would not risk it.
  • If they might be exposed to moisture, you can get wire nuts with a sealant inside.
  • When I use wire nuts on the 120 circuits I usually give them a clockwise wrap with electrical tape for security.
  • Wire nuts work fine as long as they are sized properly. Just hold the wires in one hand and give a good pull on the wire nut with the other hand and if you can't pull it off it's good to go.
