wire size for 50 amp service

I want to be able to run my air conditioners when I have my rv parked in the yard but I have to park about 100 feet from my 50 amp power outlet to be able to level the Rv. What size wire is required?

When we did our coach hook-up we ran 3 #4 cable RED/White/ and Black in hard conduit about 50 feet, We installed a 50 amp dual phase Circuit breaker in our master panel, then ran the conduit out thru the wall and attached it to the house, and ended at the Out door service box for the coach, enclosed is 4 way receptacle.
We also carry a 50' ready made 50 amp extension chord. It's some thing we thought we needed, but never use.

That would have been single, split phase service.

    Cheers,

#4 may be appropriate but you may find it hard to find a 50 amp male and female plug that #4 can be used with.

4GA is going to be very very very heavy.. As an extension cord. I'd bury the line and put in a pedestal.

If the plug won't take 4GA there are ways to "reduce" the last 1/4 to 1 inch so it fits the plug, but as Pianofish said.. Not going to be easy.

Is this temporary or where it is always parked in the yard??

If the permanent location you would be better off to move the power pedestal closer to the MH, and use 4 gauge wire from panel to pedestal, can't imagine what a 100' 4/4 even SO would be like to wrestle with.

  • You dont need a building permit for an extension cord nor do you need to add breakers or worry about phase (standard residential service is single phase).
To answer your question, 4awg copper is the appropriate size to run 100 feet from the 50A receptacle.
  • First and foremost check with your municipal building code office. Violation of code is a get out of jail free card for your insurance company. You may end up using 4AWG cable. Follow code exactly. Many insist on ganged 240 breakers. Few homes have identical phase voltages. I match service drop high phase to load highest draw. Your mileage may vary.
