It really doesn't hurt anything to just plug in your RV without switching off any breakers.
Of course the manufacturer put a label right next to the outlet telling you to turn off before connecting. Why would they do that? Maybe they understand that the arcing will damage the contacts, like found in nearly all campgrounds.
It all depends on the load when plugging in. If nothing heavy, like a water heater, fridge or battery charger power up when plugging in, it really wont hurt anything. I've been doing this for years.
On my newest TT I have a Surge protector that doesn't pass power through for 15 seconds (?) so it's dead when plugged in.
Cummins, I installed the 30A a long time ago - long before I had a 50A rig. Plus, I really don't ever need 50A at home. If I ever do need 50, there's an abandoned 50A Spa circuit nearby that I could easily redirect.
Drew, I didn't see where the OP said he needed to bury the wire. Since I've gone even farther without burrying, I just assumed the same of the OP. You are of course correct; Romex is not for direct burial, which brings up another good point for the OP.
I would never direct bury a wire again. I have a 20A circuit that used the correct wire but something has still chewed the wire underground someplace. So that makes the GFCI in the house pop for that circuit.
I would put anything that's burried in conduit, for which one should use THHN or THWN rated wire.
