wiring a Aerocool Shark computer fan for Refrig. Cooling

I just bought a Aero Cool Shark computer fan to use to cool the condenser on my Dometic frig. It is rated to operatec at either hi or low speed. It has three wires, red, black and yellow. I wired it to the frig using red to positive and black to negative and tied off the yellow wire. It seems to be operating at low speed. How do I wire it to operate at high speed? I am stumped:-)
  • Adding a rheostat will only make the fan run slower. The yellow wire is a tach signal that a computer uses to sense fan speed so it is not needed for your application.

Just answered my own question. Red and yellow from the fan tied together still give me low speed only. I will have to pick up a rheostat and try that.

put a variable potentiometer AKA 'POT'/rheostat between the yellow and red wires

and then adjust it to change the speed

Ok. So how would I run power to it? Would I hook up the power to the red wire from the fan with a lead from rheostat to power from my frig? The other lead from the rheostat would go to the yellow wire from the fan?

Sorry for being so ignorant, but this is kinda greek to me.

  • Ok. I just tried hooking it up as suggested. Yellow to my 12v positive supply amd black to ground. Nothing happens. Seems like the only way it will run is with the red from the fan to red or positive from the frig and black to ground. Then seems to only run at low speed. Is it possible the yellow wire on the fan is supossed to provide some kind of feed back to a speed control built into the fan?
  • On a computer power wire, yellow is 12v and red is 5v. That is how this fan is used for "low" or "High". It should have come with a cable that will connect it either way to a power supply.

I'm thinking you could wire in a switch that will manage both depending on your needs and the weather.

Thats an idea. I will hookup the yellow to positive and see what happens. I hope that is high speed.

    Any other ideas.

  • I would say try and hook up the yellow wire to the positive instead of the red wire. red and black might equal LO, yellow and black might equal HI, not sure but just an educated guess
