Not always. The common mode upper limit voltage to the meter may not be high enough to put it on the positive side of the battery.

From what I could see from the instruction photo - they show it on the negative side. Very likely this meter will be damaged if it were connected to the 'high side' vs the 'low side'.

That's the negative post and the lead connected to it goes to a parallel battery so your assumption is correct.

CA, where's that other lead going to or coming from? Is that the Negative post?

I'm under the assumption that All power goes through the shunt and that the shunt is installed on the Negitive side of the battery/bank.

I just got one very similar but not identical. It displays voltage, current going out of the battery, calculates power out and integrates over time to show the energy (amp-hours) out. Unfortunately mine does not respond to current charging the battery. Ebay link

It appears to be a battery monitor or at least it displays both amps and volts. As such the shunt has to be mounted near the battery as shown.

It looks like you have more than just a volt meter. The shunt is used for an ammeter. The photo looks like there is a third function???
The shunt goes in the negative lead to the battery. I found it a real pain to mount and ended up putting it in a plastic box to protect it from the weather.

You can put the actual meter anywhere since only small wire is required for the connections to the voltage measurement point and the shunt.
