Fifty years ago merchants wrapped vegetables and stuff from the open markets in newspaper. Carry stuff home and use the newspaper to kindle the dinner fire.
In a landfill, some items can generate heat that would serve as ignition. Now stuff in plastic. In an almost O2 free environment, formaldehyde plus 3000 additional carcinogenic emissions can form.

And for free, we ruin our economy. The stupidity is ghastly.
