Wondering about my 1982 RV's roof, it needs to be fixed.

Hey there everyone, I'm very new to this forum. I apologize if this is in the wrong category. I've owned my 1982 Ford Dolphin RV, it's 21 feet on a Ford F250 chassis, for about a year. I'm wondering what options I have for either replacing or resealing my roof. It has quite a few leaks and has been badly re-sealed/caulked in the past by previous owner. I would love to be able to keep this motorhome, it's in wonderful condition other than the roof leakage and only has 20,000 miles on it. The roof is metal, and has maybe two or three previous attempts at sealing it which were unsuccessful. I bought it for 3,000 dollars. I can post pictures if that's helpful too.
  • My 1983 has an aluminum roof and I had to repair a section under a plastic top box. Anodic corrosion had pockmarked holes all over the front of the aluminum skin.

My solution was to use USeal-Band roof repair tape from Home Depot and Eternabond. The U-Seal was the most affordable way to cover a large area and I used 1" strips of Eternabond to seal the seams between strips and the outer edge of the whole repair area.

If you need to seal individual cracks in the roof, clean with acetone or Eternabond prep. and then fix with Eternabond. Use a metal roller.

If you have to repair the entire roof because it is damaged all over, then there is something called BusKote that is specifically designed for buses and RV's (both vehicles that live outdoors and tend to have sectional roof's).

  • Is that a chassis mount? Looks good. Would be worth the time to get it tip top shape IMO.

We can't see the top but just from the picture it looks like the joints are leaking. If you have a one piece Al roof and the roof is not pitted through or cracked the only place it can leak is around the cut outs for skylights, vents etc. Being corrugated on the side walls I think I would try caulking there, and either caulking or eternabond type tape on the flat top.
