won,t turn over

l have a 1995 F350 7.3 powerstroke the other day at 3 am l went to crank it up. it would turn over but won,t start. so l hooked up the the engine block after 3 hours l went to crank it and all it would do was click, so l cleaned all the battery posts still click. then l pulled the starter and had it checked it was good so l replaced the solenoid also had the batterys checked everything checked out but all it will do is click. what am l missing. need help this thing is kicking my butt/
  • Bad connections would be my first guess.

Sometimes, a vehicle Mfg will slip in a catastrophic fuse into the positive battery cable. These can be difficult to find as they are jacketed with the same cable insulation jacket.

The best diagnostic test is to see what voltage and amperage are present at the starter when called upon to turn. This measurement will discover any number of issues.
  • 99.9% of the time this is caused by a bad connection somewhere, be that at the battery, starter, or chassis ground. You need to pull the connections apart and actually clean them. A visual inspection will not root out the problems.
  • Could it possibly have a 2nd relay? Our V-10 does, it's not shown in any diagrams, we had the same symptoms you are having, but I don't know if any other engines have a 2nd one or not.
  • And nowhere in this story did you charge the battery.....or jump it ???
    Really ???

    Battery tests can lie.

A healthy battery is critical in getting a diesel started.

And the battery is the first thing you should suspect when the solenoid just clicks.
