Yamaha ef2000is Twin Tech cables overloading gennies

We have basically new generators. We used them on a couple camping trips, for a total of 10 hours (maybe) over the last few years. We are heading out tomorrow, and I wanted to test them before we took off.

It's 95-degrees here in the CA foothills today. We are at 1800 ft elevation. Just fyi in case it's a factor.

We started the gennies and then the AC. We overloaded them, so we figured out that with our new converter, we need to turn off the main breaker before starting the gennies. Then turn on the main breaker, then the AC. Problem 1 solved.

We went inside for a cupcake. We went back outside to test if we can run the AC on eco mode once it's up and running. Sooooo, we plugged in the Twin Tech cable and then started each generator. Oops. Overload on one gennie. So we started each generator and then plugged in the cable. Oops again, overload on Gennie 1. Did it again, Overload on Gennie 1. Did it again, overload on Gennie 2. It didn't seem to matter which generator the cable was plugged into first.

My husband is going through the maintenance checklist now. Any other ideas? We have NO load on the gennies. We just plugged the darn cable in.

  • Hook up cable. Start up one generator, in regular mode. It will energize both Inverters on both generators, and keep them in 60 Hz phase. Start up second generator in regular mode. Warm the motors up for 2 minutes each. Once the motors are warmed up, turn off all other major electrical loads, like microwave, electric water heater, etc, electrical junk you would use if plugged in to a RV campground pedestal full time, then turn on the A/C. Let AC compressor and fan engage. You do NOT want your voltage dropping below 105 to 106V on start up. Alternately, do a search here for getting an easy start capacitor for your AC unit.

Once AC is up and running and cooling, drop both generators back into Eco mode, to save on fuel.

Or you could read the owners manual for your generator.

Maybe this was not an issue? Getting the generators in sync may have been the issue.

For easiest start... turn off all breakers in the RV except the main and the air conditioner. Once air is running for a minute then turn on the rest of the breakers.

I assume you have the water heat and fridge set to propane only.

Also if you turn the air off to say run the microwave leave the air off for at least five minutes for the internal pressure to equalize for easier starting.

Connect the gennies, then start the generators one at a time. Then connect gennies to your RV. A/C probably will not work in ECO mode. Turn off eco mode and your A/C should be cool. (no pun intended.)

    Good luck.

We did exactly as you suggested. Bingo. It worked. I *thought* we had plugged in the cables first, but apparently not. :S Works now :) No idea what else it could have been as everything still looks new inside. Not even going to mess with success and try eco mode. :B

We also had the gennies right next to each other where one exhaust was blowing into the intake of the other. No bueno.

Your owner's manual probably says this.

Does this mean you DID connect them both first?
