Yet another battery question

Hi y’all
I’m still shopping batteries for my solar setup. I want agms and am leaning toward 6v gc instead of 12v deep cycle. Does that sound reasonable? I know this is vague but I’m trying to keep it simple.
Thanks

  • Two 6v Trojan deep cycle AGM are 230 amp hour and two Grp 27 Trojan AGM deep cycle are 200 amp hour. I would go with the 6v for the greater capacity.

6v (or one huge 12v) will not have balance issues compared to parallel 12v batteries but that is the only advantage with AGM.

So, you think that no water to add, no fumes escaping and much less tendency to sulphate are not advantages ??
  • AGM 6v is built virtually the same as 12v. AGM does not have the differences similar to flooded batteries.

6v (or one huge 12v) will not have balance issues compared to parallel 12v batteries but that is the only advantage with AGM.

So get what fits for the best cost vs capacity.
  • I loved my AGMs. Maintenance was blowing the dust off once a year.

If money is not an object consider Li batteries. Saves a lot of weight, takes monster charge currents, no absorb phase, no maintenance, can withstand 80% discharge, doesn't complain about being stored undercharged, and lasts a long, long time. What's not to like?

Sound reasonable ?? Not for me. But that's what you want, so buy them,...its your money.

On solar you tend to do mostly "shallow" cycles instead of "deep cycles" Different battery "styles" do better with shallow cycles, but you might be doing deep cycles on solar. So what's the scenario? then pick a battery style that goes best with that.
