California F350 owners DMV CVRA

Hear me out, I’ve called dmv several times and every answer is different. I’ve spoken with owners of trucks that I’m considering purchasing and some don’t know about cvra fees and some say it doesn’t apply. However it’s definitely a thing, right? Hence the dmv form 4008 https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/uploads/2024/10/REG-4008-R5-2015-ASB-WWW.pdf

I do not intend or foresee myself using the truck for commercial purposes nor am I for hire. I do intend to use it for daily driving, the summer recreational boat haul, perhaps a 5th wheel in the future, Home Depot errands, etc.

Does cvra apply to me? Help me out, share your experience with this please, if any

  • Are you saying your curb weight is 8,100 lbs and your GVW is 11,400? Or are you asking a hypothetical question?

I think this applies to commercial vehicles, not privately owned pickups. But if you are concerned about it, If you only weigh 11,400 you are clear there. If you are at 8,100 is there a way you can drop 101 lbs?

Example given is from a truck I’m currently considering purchasing. And based on the informationkatkat provided, it applies to privately owned as well. Bummer. I see f350s on the fwy and streets all the time in Orange County and Los Angeles county and no weight stickers?? And the owners of the f350s I’ve inquired about don’t pay any cvra. Which means they’re not accurately reporting to the dmv intentionally or lack of knowledge on this matter. It’s easy to turn a blind eye on this matter either way because the end result would be pay less fees, but what happens if you get into an accident? Then what.

  • katkat Where are these published rules? Tried looking. Also 11400 gvwr curb 8150 scenario 2  12000 gvwr curb 7900

      • Pickup trucks continue to be registered by the unladen weight and assessed a weight fee regardless of the vehicle’s GVW. The unladen weight of a pickup cannot exceed 8,000 pounds and its GVW rating must be less than 11,500 pounds.

      https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2/commercial-vehicles/commercial-vehicle-registration-act-of-cvra/

If you got these numbers right both trucks require cvra, but if one had 7900 curb weight and gvw 11400 it would not require it. Notice in the text they discuss pickups separately from "commercial vehicles", they have separate rules for all pickups in general. I know it sounds conflicting because first they say "regardless of GVW" and right below they say just this:

Exception: A REG 4008 is not required for pickups with an unladen weight of 8,000 pounds or less.

But seems like they had capped cvra exemption by GVW 11,500 for a puckup and it's published here

AB-2963 that would have exempt all pickups from commercial fees had failed to advance

Well! There it is. It all makes sense after reading AB-2963. The main question was does this apply to me or anyone not using the truck commercially, or for business? The answer is yes. Thank you, I never came across that assembly bill in all my research or.. I failed to notice. I guess that’s why there’s a derated option at the dealer, however even when you subtract the trucks payload it will still be above 8001 unladen, at least in the example I gave which is a xlt model. Only a scale will show the actual right? There might be hope still lol.

  • f 350 are not all the same

Before you ask you need to clarify 1) curb weight 2) gvw

The answer is in the published rules, based on these weights
