Hello,
I haven't really towed anything real heavy yet, but I went from a 04' Ford Explorer 4.0L V6 that I used to pull a 3-place ATV trailer. I got rid of that in May of 2012 and bought a 07.5 GMC Sierra 2500HD CC SB with a LMM/Ali 1000 6-speed. I've towed my 3-place loaded with the bed loaded up I-70 (as I live in Colorado) and it flat out hauled the mail bro:B I'm planning on buying a Eclipse Attitude 27IFBG soon and that has a GVWR of 9,900lbs. I have no doubt that I won't have an issue with it. IMHO, for my situation, living at elevation a diesel is the only way to go
Now, cost of ownership. Diesel will give you a higher resale value, and the upkeep is a wash when take in to account the longer life of a diesel motor.
In all, I say as someone who went from a gasser to diesel. After it was done, I haven't looked back. For overall needs, I'll stick with a diesel from now on. ;)
