1. Happy with your choice? Yes
2. Are maintenance cost as high as you were lead to believe? Yes
3. What gas rig did you switch from, to which diesel? I started towing a 16' Scamp TT with a Mazda/Perkins 2.2 L diesel in the Sierra Nevadas. I switched over to a Mazda 2.6 L EFI gas (wanted 4wd and extended cab) towing the same Scamp in the Sierras and Appalachians. This same engine towed a 14' Coleman PU and 20' Challenger boat over the Cascades. Although the gas engine was able tow these things and the 4WD helped in launching and retrieving the boat, I always felt the little diesel did a better job with better efficiency. I decided to upgrade to a 22" Weekend Warrior TH and had no reservations to go back to diesel (even missed my first one). Although my Ford 6.0 PSD gets plenty of bad comments, it has towed the TH over the Rockies, Cascades and Sierras without ever needing performance boosts or modifications. It is still my primary tow vehicle, but now carries a TC and pulls an enclosed trailer.
4. What are you pulling and what is its GVW? I now pull an enclosed trailer at 7000 lbs with 4000 lbs of TC in the truck. Prior to this setup, I was pulling 11,200 lbs with 1000 lbs payload.
5. Will your next TV be Gas or Diesel? It will depend on what RV we have next. If it approaches 10,000 lbs combined hauling, it will be diesel. We also own a VW TDI that can tow 2000 lbs comfortably (maybe more, but never tried), so diesels will probably not leave our household. If mid sized diesels prove themselves, there is a good chance one will find its way toward me.
BTW: 22-27 mpg towing with the 2.2 L diesel, 8-10 mpg towing with the 2.6 L gas, 28-32 mpg towing with the 1.9 L diesel and 10-12 mpg towing with the 6.0 L diesel
