It is really a brand thing, Cummins is the least expensive diesel to maintain. Something to do with its true trucking history, truckers don't like paying over inflated prices for service or maintenance items. I do my filter shopping at the local Cummins NW, good prices and nice service.
The 5.9, was an off the shelf engine that Dodge and Cummins worked together on to shoehorn into a Dodge pickup.
