Buying any 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 Ton for personal use (non-commercial) and asking for non-commercial discounts is challenging. Ford offers a âderatedâ certification if ordered from the factory as such. Itâs order code 68D, which lowers the GVRW without any derating modifications actually done to the truck. This rating is recorded and permanently tied to the VIN. Insurance companies, DMV, etc can look up the VIN and see the derated certification, which allows users to classify the rig as personal use only and get out of some commercial rig requirements. Most insurance companies have a process to allow these types of rigs to qualify for the much less exspensive personal truck insurance, but this must be explained up front since most insurers automatically rate anything over 14K capacity as âcommercialâ. The only problem with a derated VIN is that it can limit resell to non-commercial buyers, since any business buyer cannot legally use the rig for commercial purposes.

With your train of thought on the lower GVW on these class 4 and above trucks, how is a commercial use is out of the question?...... Then how do so many people drive 15, 25, and 35 series trucks in commercial settings? I've had a true midget trucks from the late 70's into the mid 80s used in commercial settings, with commercial insurance etc.
I also do not per my state federal laws have GVW registrations on my vehicles for the door sticker GVW. Many states don't follow the manufactures GVW warranty ratings. You can buy whatever you want, as long as you follow the legal regs. Insurance is not an issue either, as long as I with a personal or commercial use state the GVW I am going to run down the road at for both the two rig, and trailer size added together. All trucks here pay tonnage, personal or commercial use. Your GVW is tare times 1.5 to the next highest ton. My 15 series half ton is licensed for 8000 lbs, not the 7200 lb door sticker. As is my sons 1500, the other has a Tacoma, also registered at 8000 lbs. ALl three trucks are in the 4800-5400 lbs empty relm. Too heavy for a 6000 lb registration. 8000 it is! We are legal to that amount on the two axles.
This is fourty years of running light and medium duty rigs in business use. Yes, I have been pulled over with my actual weight over the manufacture's weights, I have yet to get an overweight ticket! I have heard BC is a bit stickier on this.... At least where I am, look up RCW45 and 46 to get how the weight laws affect me here. My guess, other states are very similar, as they ALL have to follow the "federal bridge laws" or lose road funding for roads. Those max limits are based on years of weight laws for roads going back to roads for horse and buggies etc in the mid 1800's here in the states. Lbs per axle, and lbs per inch width of tire, so the engineer spec point load for the road is not damaging the roads. That is the weight that ALL of us get to run down the road at, ASSUMING, you have enough paid for license weight.

OK, here it is.
F550 1310.00 a year through State Farm with better coverage.
F250 is 1034.00 a year with better coverage. 400.00 cheaper.
House is 1550.00 a year with better coverage. 100.00 cheaper
Umbrella, 225.00 a year.
State Farm saved me a bundle, about 2800.00, and I have much better coverage now.
I am basically paying 1000.00 more for everything. What a deal!
Thanks for the State Farm Recommendation.
Now, can anybody recommend some good lotto numbers? đ

If you didn't already sign up for it, you might save some by signing up for State Farm's monitoring program.

The idea of an insurance company having me stick a monitoring device in my OBDII port to watch my every move is to Big Brother and creepy.

State farm first thought my new 2025 f550 was a commercial truck, and declined, but I sent them a photo of it with camper mounted and they changed their mind, and insured at about the same rate as my f350. I think it's about $1800/yr. While not exactly cheap, it is a $100k truck.
In CA, you can also send the DMV a notice that it is a full time camper hauler and they will rescind the commercial status so you can bypass scales.

I just got a preliminary quote of 1632.00 a year on the F550. They insure in 6 month intervals. I'm also having them quote the TC, F250, and House. I may receive a package discount, we shall see...
Thus far, I'm feeling much happier.

I'm getting a quote from state farm. We'll see how it goes.
Quotes for home, F250, F550, S&S TC, We shall see what happens.

Thanks all for your responses. I am still exploring options. Getting tired of spending money on things and not having enough coming in. Might have to start mowing lawns. Oh wait, that would turn it into a commercial work truck...
I'll keep y'all posted.

Yep, my insurance company (USAA) won't insure 450/550's as they consider them commercial. I'll be staying in the 350 and under class of trucks and campers.

Yup, most states and ins companies wonât insure a med duty truck like a light duty.
Progressive can kma though. Dropped those fuggers about 8-10 years ago.
I check rates every year or 2 to keep my ins co honest and since the Rona, insurance prices have gone way up round here (and everywhere).
So far, no one can touch AmFam the last couple times I checked. Hell, Mutual of Enumclaw basically called me uninsurable as a 50 year old, great driving record, but one âat faultâ with my kid a couple years ago from a hit and run tweaker, high as **bleep** with no insurance. Cops in Black Diamond even arrested him directly afterwards. AmFam called it at fault even though other guy got multiple tickets and tossed in jail. They burned the accident forgiveness ticket up because they could.Car insurance has gotten bad in the last few years. My other kid, his car insurance doubled in FL last year. Good record, bad hurricanesâŚ.
Good luck but try AmFam. Cars, house, boat, umbrella etc they are still low as of 6 months ago.

Holy begeezerz! 4000.00 dollars!!!
That's a jaw dropper. Anybody with a 5500, 550, 4500, 450 series truck getting a better rate than that?
