05 Ram Cummins Clutch Fan Install Advice

I had the clutch fan go south the other day while pulling the fiver in the Catskills. Suggested method for removal was to loosen the shroud and pull the fan and shroud through the bottom. After looking at it my buddy who was helping me change this in the campground found that the top if the shroud was made of flexible rubber and we were able to slide a piece of cardboard between the fan and radiator and pull it out through the top. So we only had to remove the one bolt on the bottom, spin the fan off and slide it out of the top. Only took about an hour total and a good bit of that was accessing how best to do the job. I hope this may help someone else with this year and model.

Did it thrown a code? (P0483)

Yes as well as a P0480 and a P0217. As for the water pump my best time is about 20 minutes but I am over seventy and slowing a little. Two bolts and your good to go. I wish all repairs were as easy as that.:B
  • Alot of the fans have a bad habit of eating the wires that control the fan clutch. At least it is an easy change...
as far as the water pump change, my best was 15 min along I-40 near Statesville NC, It was another truck that passed me, and I smelled the coolant. Stopped when I saw them abot 20 miles later. He had a pump, I had the gaslet and tools, and water.

Glad it wen't easily. Did you get a new one from the dealer or is it after market?
I've heard the OEM's are the only part that holds up.

When your in the middle of nowhere, you take what you can get. It is an after market, but was USA made. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Good to know and glad it was a simple fix. I'll check it out better but mine (06) sure don't seem to have the flexible rubber. But again I've never had to take it apart. Now that darn water pump is a b*tch :W :B :R and any other sarcastic faces.

The '06 has the same flexible shroud. I just pulled the radiator on an 06 the other day to clean it and pulled it out the top without removing the shroud.;)

Yea, that WP can take upwards of 30 minutes to install if you include cleaning up your tools. ;)
